http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Observatory/Datasets/chlor.czcs.html Microscopic marine plants (called phytoplankton) contain chlorophyll, a green pigment they use during photosynthesis. Using satellite sensors, we can measure chlorophyll concentrations in oceans, lakes and seas to indicate the distribution and abundance of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are the base of the marine food chain and, therefore, are a good indicator of the abundance of life in a body of water. | ||||
DP | Earth Observatory - Winter Snowpack | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Observatory/Datasets/snow.modis.html Scientists monitor global snow cover to better understand short- and long-term environmental and climatic conditions. Tutorials Topics * Tropical Weather * Formation of Worldwide Tropical Cyclones and Paths * Structure, Genesis and Stages * Variability of North Atalantic Tropical Cyclones * Hurricane Katrina and Effcts * El Nino effects on Tropical cyclones Hurricane Tracking Simulator http://www.meted.ucar.edu/hurrican/movncane The Hurricane Track Simulator is based on a simplification of the basic factors that cause hurricanes to move. The primary effect is that the storm simply moves with the wind from the much larger weather systems surrounding the storm. These weather systems are represented by idealized easterly (from east to west) trade winds near the equator, westerly winds further north, the Bermuda high pressure system, and a low pressure area near the U.S. east coast. In reality, the structure of the wind surrounding the storm is much more complicated and changes with time as the hurricane moves. Also, the northwesterly drift due to the storm is much more variable than that included in the hurricane simulator. However, these simplified wind patterns are able to generate reasonable storm tracks. | ||||
