Radar Types

If you talk to a meteorologist and mention "radar", conventional pulse radar or perhaps Doppler radar will immediately come to mind. Other uses of radar often don't, even though radar has found its way into many niches that might surprise them. From POSS sensors that estimate precipitation occurrence, type, and rate, to wind profilers, to space-based systems, radar is a major tool for the meteorologist.

The uses are so extensive that detailing all of them is beyond the scope of this course. In the ensuing pages, basic information about the main meteorological uses of radar will be given; however, this list is by no means exhaustive, and the student wishing to know more is encouraged to explore the topic on their own time.
