Mysterious Case

The morning of October 6, 2004 was a relatively benign one. There was an upper ridge over the Prairies with a trough approaching Alberta, causing some showers there.
 
Morning radar imagery was interesting, though, with something very unexpected showing up.

Looking between the radar shots and the satellite pictures, it seemed to make no sense.

At first, anomalous propagation was considered but then examination of the composite image below showed that the echoes were moving approximately with the upper winds.
