Determining Wind Direction
Max/Min Method
Identify maximum inbound and/or maximum outbound velocity at range/elevation of interest These should be about +/- 90 degrees from the zero isodop
Wind direction is
from the maximum inbound through the radar to the maximum outboundFigure 16. Determining wind from the maximum to the minimum
Zero Isodop Method
- Identify the zero isodop (ZI)
- At any point on the zero isodop
- Draw a radial from the radar to the point
- At the point draw an arrow perpendicular to radial
- Point the arrow from inbound to outbound
- This is the wind direction at that location in space
Figure 17. Determining wind direction from the zero isodop
For any point on the zero isodop
- the wind direction is perpendicular to the radial from the radar to the point
- and is directed from the inbound area to the outbound area
