Dual-polarized radars send out a pair of pulses, one horizontal, the other vertical, using two feed horns.
Polarimetric radar can tell if the raindrops in the scan volume are round or oblate, liquid or ice. This extra info can help with attenuation correction, fine-tuning Z-R relationship based on the observed DSD (Drop size Distribution).
