Birgitte Knudsen

I am a 33 year old woman.

I finished my Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from the University of Copenhagen in 2001. Since then I have been employed as an aviation forecaster at the Danish Meteorological Institute, producing all kinds of aviation forecasts and warnings for Danish airspace and the Faroe Islands in the Atlantic.

During these 8 years I have also twice been voluntarily stationed at our Met Service in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, 2½ years in all – also there providing forecast for all kinds of aviation in Greenland – commercial, civilian, military, research and search & rescue.
The latest 4 years I have participated in teaching our coming forecasters aviation meteorology.

2½ years ago I became the Danish administrator of NOMEK – a Nordic in-service course for forecasters from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, the Baltics and Denmark – a course supported by Eumetsat.

Last but not least, I have taken up the challenge being our Met Service´s radar coordinator – being the contact point to our Institute´s technical and research departments.

My hobbies and interests:
I have come to appreciate running and the big challenge of summer 2010 is a ½ marathon across the bridge to Sweden. I like being out in nature and my vacations should preferably include more days of hiking – though still haven´t tried with the big backpack. I have a growing passion for rocks and gem stones – if I had not become a meteorologist, I think I would have become a geologist. I relax with doing many kinds of handworks or reading books.
